Crossing the border between Chile and Argentina on foot is an adventure in itself, but to do it through one of the most beautiful areas in the world with incredible mountain scenery, dense forests of beech and coihue, lakes, and lagoons that the lush Patagonian landscape offers is another. Climbers from around the world come to challenge the vast walls of granite, innumerable glaciers and Pared Sur invites you to experience this unique area.
With dates to be defined for programs in January-February 2012, with travel as is described in the program below and in reverse, starting from Coyhaique to get to Puerto Natales.
Itinerary:
Day 1 - Puerto Natales - Perito Moreno Glacier - Calafate:
Starting early morning, we will pick up passengers from their respective hotels in Puerto Natales to move immediately to Cerro Castillo, where we pass through immigration out of Chile and over the border to Argentina. After performing the migration process, we will continue towards the city of El Calafate. Lunch is taken at a Restaurant en-route. During the afternoon, we visit the Perito Moreno glacier, making a mini-trek to enjoy magnificent views from its catwalks and balconies. Afterwards, we return to Calafate, where guests choose where to have dinner and their selected accommodation. (Includes lunch en route and entrance to the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. Does not include dinner)
Day 2 - Calafate - El Chalten – Trekking:
After breakfast we will go early to the village of El Chalten, known in Argentina as the "National Trekking Capital." Once we arrive, we immediately begin a trek in this area of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. There are several route options depending on weather conditions (If clear the first option is to visit the Mirador del Cerro Torre). Lunch is taken as a stop for box lunch or trail food. In the afternoon return to El Chalten, for accommodation at the Hotel and Restaurant dinner selected by guest. (Includes breakfast and box lunch)
Day 3 - El Chalten - Lago del Desierto - Navigation and trekking - Candelario Mancilla:
In the early morning we move to the southern shore of Lago del Desierto to embark on the catamaran that will take us to the north shore, where we'll proceed through immigration formalities to leave Argentina .After performing the processing and delivery of cargo to support the horses, we start the trek that will lead us to Candelario Mancilla, walking across the border between Argentina and Chile. Upon arrival at Candelario Mancilla we enter Chile. Overnight accommodation is at Hospedaje Familiar Rústico in Candelario Mancilla and dinner in the same place. (Includes accommodation, breakfast at hotel, box lunch and dinner in Candelario Mancilla). *There is the possibility of crossing by horse, but will require coordination in advance.
Day 4 - Sailing Lago O'Higgins - O'Higgins Glacier - Villa O'Higgins:
During the day, we sail on Lake O'Higgins, crossing a beautiful lake system, with the option (highly recommended!) to make the trip to the Glacier O'Higgins, one of the many arms of the Southern Ice Fields. In the afternoon we arrive to Villa O'Higgins, with accommodation and dinner left to the guest to decide. (Includes breakfast and box lunch)
Day 5 - Free day in Villa O'Higgins with options of recommended activities:
We all need a play day so isolated from the sector and the prevailing climatic conditions in the area, which generally are stable at this time but may have bad weather delaying (or cancelling further routes). With this in mind, in Villa O'Higgins it is possible to perform a series of activities to better understand this remote village with an emphasis on horseback riding, fishing, hiking and mountain biking. Dinner is taken where guest chooses. Accommodation is provided in the same hotel in Villa O'Higgins. (Includes breakfast, box lunch)
Day 6 - Villa O'Higgins - Fjord Mitchell - Puerto Yungay - Caleta Tortel – Cochrane:
Early in the morning after breakfast, we will move along the Carretera Austral to Mitchell
Fjord to navigate the barge that will take us to Puerto Yungay. Here we reconnect to the Carretera Austral to head towards Caleta Tortel. We cross its bridges made of Guaitecas Cypress, where we visit the Central Plaza and other sites of interest. Lunch is taken at Caleta Tortel at place of guest's choice. Later we will move on to Cochrane, where we spend the night. Dinner is left to guest's choice in Cochrane.
Day 7 - Cochrane - Puerto Bertrand - Rio Baker - Drainage Lago General Carrera - Rio Tranquilo:
After breakfast in Cochrane, we head due north along the Carretera Austral to Rio Tranquilo and our next stay. En route we will visit several viewpoints of the Rio Baker, Puerto Bertrand and drainage of Lago General Carrera. Optional excursions on Lago General Carrera to visit the Capillas de Mármol (Marble Chapels). Dinner taken in Rio Tranquilo chosen by guest (Includes breakfast, box lunch)
Day 8 - Rio Tranquilo - Trekking Villa Cerro Castillo – Coyhaique:
After the last breakfast together, we move to Villa Cerro Castillo, where we make a trek through the majestic approach of Cerro Castillo. Box lunch is taken in the area. In the afternoon we continue our trip to Coyhaique, where guests choose their hotels for the final night. We suggest taking dinner together as a group to crown a memorable journey!

- 8 days and 7 nights with the activities described in the program above.
- Lunch en route Day 1
- Hotel stays in Calafate, El Chalten, Villa O'Higgins, Hospedaje Familiar in Candelario Mancilla, Accommodation in Cochrane and Rio Tranquilo
- Meals: hotel buffet breakfast, box lunch (sandwich, fruit, energy bars, nuts, etc) dinner at Hospedaje Familiar en Candelario Mancilla
- Entrance to the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. Trips across Lago del Desierto and Lago O'Higgins, support horses crossing the border (day 3). All other transfers as described in the program.
- Guides with the support of Radio and GPS, mapping the route and first aid. Pre-established contingency plan.
Not included:
- Air ticket.
